The FX Nachtmann Crystal Werke GmbH is a manufacturer of crystal with headquarters in Neustadt an der Waldnaab . In addition to the industrial mass production of glasses of all kinds (including so-called semi-finished products, which are sold to glass mills for further refinement, for example), artisanal / artistically sophisticated glass objects are also produced.

history

FX Nachtmann Bleikristallwerke GmbH was founded in 1834 by glass cutter ( engraver ) Joh. Michael Nachtmann (1796–1884) in Unterhütte ( Herzogau glassworks ) near Waldmünchen . He made drinking glasses, bottles and jugs with 25 glassmakers. His son Franz Xaver Nachtmann (1830–1892) took over the business in 1851 and moved it to Ödhütte (today Voithenberghütte) between Waldmünchen and Furth im Wald . In 1866 production with 45 employees moved to Seebachhütte near Bayerisch Eisenstein . In 1892 Johann Frank (1856–1905) took over the business, keeping the company name FX Nachtmann .

In 1901 the company was taken over by Zacharias Frank (1869–1944) and the company headquarters with 100 employees relocated to Neustadt an der Waldnaab . The Riedlhütte glass factory was leased in 1905 and acquired in 1907.

The lead crystal was introduced in 1912. The Riedlhütte site was expanded in 1920 and a new plant was built in Amberg . In 1945 the production facilities destroyed by the war were renewed and lead crystal was manufactured at the Neustadt ad Waldnaab and Riedlhütte locations.

In 1969 the FX Nachtmann company became the FX Nachtmann Bleikristallwerke KG. In 1979 the legal form was changed to a GmbH. In 1983 the foundation stone for the third lead crystal factory was laid in Weiden's north.

The traditional Spiegelau crystal glass factory in Spiegelau, including its Plant II, the Gistl glassworks in Frauenau , was taken over in 1990. With the establishment of Kristallglasfabrik Amberg GmbH in 1991, there was a production cooperation with Rosenthal AG ( Selb ), whereby the technical and commercial management remained with Nachtmann. In 1993 the Nachtmann company became FX Nachtmann Crystal AG.

The stake of Rosenthal AG in the Amberg crystal glass factory was taken over in 1995 by FX Nachtmann Crystal AG, which has held a capital share of almost 90% since 1997.

In 2004, Nachtmann Crystal AG was taken over by Riedel Glas .

In 2004 the company had around 1,600 employees.

In June 2009, the management of Riedel Glas announced that in future they would only concentrate on three production locations and that the plant in Riedlhütte would be closed at the end of the year. This means the loss of their jobs for 180 employees; 30 employees at the plant were offered the opportunity to work in other plants. In future, lead crystal will only be produced in the Weiden plant.

The glassworks in Frauenau was closed on January 31, 2019, after production had already ceased in October 2018.

The turnover of FX Nachtmann Bleikristallwerke GmbH in 2010 was EUR 47.1 million.
