The bare-throated heron reaches a length of 70 to 80 cm. As the name suggests, its throat is not feathered. Their color is yellowish, bright orange during the breeding season. The plumage of adult birds is gray with thin black stripes. They wear a black cap on their heads. The underside of the neck is white with a black border. The belly is dark brown. The fledglings are more broadly striped, and their belly and throat are white.

distribution

Its distribution area includes Central America from southern Mexico to Panama . It is also found in neighboring regions of Colombia . The main habitat is mangroves , as well as freshwater habitats .

behavior

The bare-throated heron feeds mainly on fish , but also prey on crustaceans and frogs . When brooding , it usually builds its nest in a tree. This consists of branches and twigs. The female lays one to three green-speckled eggs in it. The clutch is incubated by both parent birds.
