Nadejda Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven
Nadejda Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven (born Nadejda Mikhailovna Romanowa, Countess de Torby , or English legend Nadejda Mikhailovna Romanova, Countess de Torby , born March 28, 1896 in London ; † January 22, 1963 in Cannes ) was a member from the house of Romanow-Holstein-Gottorp . Life
Nadejda was the second daughter of the Russian Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich Romanov (1861-1929), the second son of Grand Duke Michael Nikolajewitsch Romanow (1832-1909) and his wife Princess Cäcilie von Baden (1839-1891). Her mother was Countess Sophie von Merenberg (1868–1927), daughter of Prince Nikolaus von Nassau and Natalie Alexandrowna Puschkina. Through the latter, her grandmother, she was the great-granddaughter of the Russian national poet Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin and a descendant of the African prince Abraham Petrovich Hannibal . Since her father entered into a so-called morganatic marriage , he drew the displeasure of his cousin (second degree) Tsar Nicholas II and was banished from the country. He gave her mother the title of Countess de Torby and their children.
On November 15, 1916, Nada , as she was called in the family, married Prince George von Battenberg (1892-1938), eldest son of Prince Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg and Princess Viktoria of Hesse-Darmstadt in London . A year later the family Anglicized their name to Mountbatten. The marriage had two children:
- Tatiana Elizabeth (1917–1988), unmarried
- David Michael (1919-1970)
- ⚭ 1950–1954 Romaine Dahlgren Pierce (1923–1975)
- ⚭ 1960–1970 Lady Janet Mercedes Bryce (* 1937)
During the custody dispute between Gloria Morgan-Vanderbilt (1904-1965) and her sister-in-law Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942), Gloria's way of life and changing liaisons, including a lesbian relationship with Lady Nadja Mountbatten, became known.
