Nahed Hattar ( Arabic ناهض حتر; * 1960 ; † September 25, 2016 in Amman , Jordan ) was a prominent Jordanian journalist and political activist .

Life

Hattar came from a Christian-Arab family, but described himself as not a believer or an atheist. He was a cartoonist and satirist who had been known in Jordan for years.

On August 12, 2016, he published a cartoon on his Facebook page in which the " Islamic State " (IS) was a satirical theme. The "... In Paradise" with cartoon titled shows an IS-fighter with two women ( houris is) in bed. The god , shown with a white beard and a golden crown , looks through a crack into the tent and asks the fighter if he needs anything else. He asks him to bring him wine and to instruct the Archangel Gabriel to get him cashew nuts. The IS fighter does not address God with سبحان الله ( Subhanallah , "Praise be to Allah"), but in a play on words by the cartoonist with Subhanech ("Your greatness"). In addition, the jihadist asks to send a servant to clear things up, and to install a door in the tent in future and knock beforehand. Hattar was then insulting Islam and inciting sectarian accused discord and he was arrested on 15 August 2016 and indicted.

Course of action

On September 25, 2016, Hattar was shot and killed in an attack on the steps in front of the Amman Palace of Justice in the Abdali district. He was hit by three bullets just before he was due to appear in court on the cartoon. The assassin was arrested following the crime.

The perpetrator is Riad Ismail A., a 49-year-old man from Amman. According to a first confession, he killed Hattar because of the cartoon he posted on his Facebook page in August. Nahed Hattar had previously received multiple death threats in public. Personal protection was not provided for him. Hattar's killer was sentenced to death and executed in early March 2017 .
