The Nahr al-Awali ( Arabic نهر الأولي, DMG Nahr al-Awalī , also: Nahr El Aouali, Nahr Bisri in the upper reaches) is a year-round water-bearing river in Lebanon . It arises from several sources in the Lebanon Mountains . North of Sidon it pours into the Levant Sea . In ancient times he was called Asklepios .

course

The river arises from the confluence of several streams: Nahr el-Barouk from Mount Barouk , Nahr Aray (Aaray, which arises from various mountain streams near Jezzine ) and Azzibeh , which has its source on Mount Niha. The source streams run in a south-westerly direction, corresponding to the mountain ranges. There the river bears the name Nahr Bisri as long as it flows through the alluvial areas of the Marj Bisri valley. It turns directly south until it is west of Delghani ( Arabic دلغاني) swung back to the west. Here it meanders strongly to the west and meets at Sibline (south of Hjaijiye, Arabic حجيجة) on the border between Mount Lebanon Governorates and South Lebanon . In this lower section it forms the border between the two governorates. It flows in a winding course in a predominantly westerly direction to Sidon , where it flows into the Mediterranean on the northern outskirts. It thus also forms the natural border of the southern Lebanon region .

Archaeological sites

Various archaeological sites can be found along the river. These include the temple of Marj Bisri in the fertile river valley, the Qalaat Abou el-Hassan citadel , whose fortifications date from the 12th century, and the Eschmun temple near the estuary.
