The Name Jesus Church ( Polish Kościół Imienia Jezus ) is a Roman Catholic church in the northern old town of Wroclaw . Today it is used as the university church of the University of Wroclaw .

location

The church is located in the north of the old town of Wroclaw near the Oder . It is located at Universitätsplatz Nr. 1 (Polish plac Uniwersyteckim 1). The church is connected to the south wing of the old university building by an archway.

history

Between 1689 and 1698 the church was built according to plans by Johann Georg Knoll in the baroque style by the Jesuit order . Until 1734 the interior was designed in the late Baroque style. A castle once stood on the site. Of this only a two-storey building has survived, which was integrated into the church and is now used as a sacristy . The Jesuits stayed in the house of God until the secularization in 1810. The church then passed to the Matthias parish , whose parish church had been the smaller Kreuzherrenkirche St. Matthias until then . The Jesuit Church has also been called St. Matthias many times since then .

The church was only slightly damaged in World War II and repaired shortly afterwards. Between 1947 and 1995 the church was used again by the Jesuits. Today the church is used as a parish church again. In addition, concerts and musical performances are often held here.

Architecture and equipment

The Namen-Jesu-Kirche is a single-nave baroque building. The polychromy and the frescoes inside are by Johann Michael Rottmayr . The frescoes show the life of Jesus as well as episodes from the history of the Jesuit order. In the center of the church the baby Jesus is depicted in a sun chariot, surrounded by the apostles, dignitaries of the Jesuit order and Pope Clement IX. and Emperor Leopold I.

The high altar dates from 1726 and was created by Christoph Tausch . Next to the sanctuary to the north is the chapel dedicated to Ignatius of Loyola , the founder of the Jesuit order. The pulpit is a work by Franz Joseph Mangoldt .
