Almost 98.5% of the population are Hindus and a good 1% are Muslims ; the Christian population share of 0.5% is rather normal for the rural areas of southern India. The male population is about 4% higher than the female. Only about 25% of the population are illiterate. Most of the residents speak Tamil as their mother tongue.

economy

Agriculture used to be the livelihood of the self-sufficient population. Today most groceries can be bought in the market or from street vendors. Woven products (especially saris ) play a huge role in the income of the local population.

history

The older and medieval history of the place is largely in the dark. In the Middle Ages, however, the place must have had a certain importance, because the two main temples of the city opposite, but separated by a small lake, are foundations of the Chola dynasty or their court officials from the 10th century.

Attractions

The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is dedicated to the incarnations of Vishnu and was built in the 10th century. It consists of a large windowless and largely undivided vestibule ( mandapa ) and a square cella ( garbhagriha ) , the tiered vimana tower of which shows an abundance of renewed, almost “baroque”-looking figures. Immediately next to it is the architecturally similar, but altogether much younger Sri Somesvara Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva .

The second main temple of the place is also dedicated to Sri Somesvara, ie Shiva. Its vestibule impresses with its (later added and brightly painted) roof border consisting of figure niches and pseudo-architecture as well as differently designed stone window grilles ( jalis ) . The stepped pyramid-shaped tower structure above the cella shows similar decorative elements; it ends in an umbrella-like dome. In front of the temple entrance there is a Nandi shrine and two pillars of honor.
