The Nangpa La ( Chinese 囊 帕拉 山口 ) is a mountain pass at an altitude of 5716 meters in the west of the Cho Oyu , the eighth highest mountain on earth, in the Himalayas on the Chinese - Nepalese border.
The Nangpa La represents the highest trade route in the Himalayas and has been used as a link between the Sherpa from Khumbu and the Tibetans for around 800 years .
After the Chinese invasion of Tibet , the Nangpa La lost its importance as a caravan route due to the border being closed . Until 2001 the region was a military exclusion zone. Now there are yak caravans again, which transport cheap products from China to Khumbu.
