Naoto Nagaosa ( Japanese 永 長 直 人 , Nagaosa Naoto ; born February 21, 1958 in Japan ) is a Japanese physicist and professor of physics at the University of Tokyo .

Live and act

Nagaosa received his Ph.D from Tokyo University in 1986. From 1988 to 1990 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Physics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1991 he became an Associate Professor in the Department for Applied Physics at the University of Tokyo. In 1998 he became a full professor there. He is also a Principal Investigator at the Center for Emergent Matter Science at the RIKEN Research Center .

Nagaosa researches mainly on the theory of condensed matter and quantum materials , especially high-temperature superconductors , manganites with colossal magnetoresistance, quantum spin systems and spin textures. He also researches spintronics , mainly the spin-orbit interaction , the anomalous Hall effect and the spin-Hall effect .

Nagaosa was awarded the 9th Japanese IBM Research Prize in 1995. In the same year he received the Nishinomiya Yukawa Memorial Prize . In 1998 he received the 2nd Superconductivity Science and Technology Award. In 2004 he won the 11th Nissan Science Award, a year later he was awarded the 51st Nishina Memorial Prize . In 2020 Nagosa was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
