The Nardi FN.305 was a trainer aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Fratelli Nardi in the 1930s.

history

The origins of the Nardi FN.305, designed by the brothers Luigi and Euste Nardi, go back to 1933. The aircraft was shown two years later at the first international air show in Milan . While the prototype is a 7- cylinder - radial engine Fiat A.70 was installed, the standard design used (since 1937 built) the new 6-cylinder in-line engine Alfa Romeo 115 . Since Fratelli Nardi, as a craft business, could not manufacture the aircraft himself, they were built by Piaggio .

construction

The FN.305 was a cantilever low-wing aircraft in composite construction ; the prototype was a tandem two-seater with a closed cockpit . The tail was in conventional form with the elevator under the rudder executed. The FN.305 was one of the first Italian aircraft with retractable landing gear ; it was drawn into the wing. A grinding spur was attached under the tail unit.

The Alfa Romeo 115 was an air-cooled, hanging 6-cylinder in-line engine from Alfa Romeo , which was a license production of the de Havilland Gipsy Six .

use

The Italian Regia Aeronautica bought 258 Nardi FN.305: almost all of them were two-seat FN.305A, used as a school or liaison aircraft.

In addition, nine aircraft were sold to Chile and 31 to Romania in 1938 . In Romania, 124 copies were later built under license at the Întreprinderea Aeronautică Română (IAR). The largest order (300 aircraft) was for France , but by the time war was declared on June 10, 1940, only 41 had been delivered. The last foreign customer was Hungary , who ordered 50 copies.

After September 8, 1943, the Luftwaffe confiscated 26 Nardi FN.305s for liaison duties.
