Natan Valmin

Mattias Natanael Valmin (born May 30, 1898 in Asarum, Blekinge , † December 17, 1967 in Lund ) was a Swedish classical archaeologist .

Life

Natan Valmin was born to the shoemaker Sven Mattson and Amalia Olsson in Asarum in southern Sweden, where he grew up. After studying with Martin P. Nilsson at Lund University , he was a scholarship holder at the École française d'Athènes in 1925/26 and secretary of the Swedish Institute in Rome in 1926/27 . In the spring of 1926 he traveled to Messenia, which was hardly archaeologically researched at the time, and there began excavations at the Malthi hill , which lasted until 1936. In addition, he also explored other archaeological sites in Messenia, including the sanctuary of the river god Pamisos near Agios Floros and in the southern Messinian town of Koroni . In 1930 he published his doctoral thesis on the ancient topography of Messenia and received his doctorate in 1931. In May 1935 he married his wife Lita Wallin, with whom he had three children. He taught classical archeology and ancient history as a lecturer and professor at Lund University from 1930, 1932 and 1936 to 1940, and also in Gothenburg from 1932 to 1934 . He died on December 17, 1967 and was buried in Lund on August 18, 1968.

In 2008 a bronze bust was erected in Malthi in his honor.
