The village of Agios Floros ( Greek Άγιος Φλώρος ( m. Sg. )) Forms together with Christofileika a local community in the northwest of the municipality of Kalamata in the Greek region of Peloponnese .

location

The local community of Agios Floros extends in the far northwest of the municipality of Kalamata on the border to the municipality of Ichalia over 8.199 km². In the east borders Bromovrysi and south Arfara on. The Ethniki Odos 7 runs through the village in a north-south direction and the A 7 runs parallel to the west of it . The village of Christofileika is just under three kilometers north on Ethniki Odos 7.

The village of Agios Floros lies on the edge of a chain of hills that form the western end of the Taygetos to the Messenian plain. The main source of the Pamisos rises to the northwest of the village . This spring is fed by a large karst basin, which ensures a continuous flow throughout the year and is the most important of the Messenian Plains. The water-rich spring forms a permanent wetland, on the east side of which are the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to the river god Pamisus .

Pamisus sanctuary

The small Doric Ante temple was excavated and examined in the 1930s by the Swedish archaeologist Natan Valmin . According to contemporary travel reports in the 19th century, the temple was still well preserved until its stones were used by the owner of the property to build houses, who also sold some bronze objects. In 1929 Natan Valmin found the remains of the temple, some of which were under water. In autumn 1933 he was able to excavate the temple when the tide was low.

Inside the cella , two inscriptions were found that were dedicated to Pamisos and Pameisos. One of the inscriptions belongs to a bull relief. According to Valmin, this is likely to represent Pamisos, as river gods were often depicted tauromorphically in the Peloponnese and elsewhere.

The temple was built over an older sacrificial pit, possibly the then enclosed source of the river. Statuettes, figurines and vessels were sacrificed in these, as well as coins dating from the 4th century BC. Can be dated to the 4th century AD.

The oldest objects found at the sanctuary date from the early 6th century. This includes a 10 cm bronze statuette depicting Heracles fighting the Hydra .

Two bronze plates depicting male genitals and two or three small Kouros statuettes with deformations on the legs are interpreted as an indication of a healing cult. According to Pausanias , young children were healed at the Pamisus springs. The same author also reports that the sanctuary of Pamisus was donated by King Sybotas and that the kings sacrificed to the river god every year. Neither the sanctuary nor the river god are mentioned elsewhere in ancient literature.

A statuette of a spear-bearer bought at the market bears an inscription, according to which it was consecrated by a Pythodorus on the Pamisus River. It should also originally come from the sanctuary.

Modern times

The rural municipality of Agios Floros, founded in 1912, was incorporated into the municipality of Arfara after the territorial reform in 1997 . This, in turn, was absorbed by the 2010 administrative reform in the municipality of Kalamata.
