The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is a research facility that conducts experiments with high magnetic fields . It is the world's largest of its kind and is operated at three different locations: in Tallahassee ( Florida ) from the Florida State University in Los Alamos ( New Mexico ) from the Los Alamos National Laboratory and in Gainesville (Florida) from the University of Florida . Every year it is visited by over 1100 scientists.

history

In 1989 Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory submitted an application to the National Science Foundation to set up a new laboratory for high-field magnet research. This application attracted a lot of attention as the laboratory would replace the largest of its kind to date, the Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At the same time, MIT submitted an application to continue the laboratory there. The latter was rejected, and Florida State University was commissioned in August 1990 to implement its plan. The headquarters of the new laboratory in Tallahassee opened in 1994. The first director of the NHMFL was Jack Crow, who retired in 2004. His successor and the current laboratory director is Gregory S. Boebinger .

The NHMFL develops new technologies for high field magnets and operates experimental facilities for measurements under continuous magnetic fields up to 45T and pulsed magnetic fields up to 100T. External scientists can use these instruments on request. The applications are reviewed by panels of experts. In addition, NHMFL scientists conduct their own research in several specialist areas, in particular in solid-state physics and geochemistry .

Facilities

Florida State University

The NHMFL is headquartered at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, where around 300 people work in an area of ​​nearly 35,000 square meters. There are continuous high field magnets with instruments for thermodynamic , spectroscopic and transport measurements.

University of Florida

In the NHMFL branch at the University of Florida in Gainesville, experiments can be carried out at low temperatures (up to 0.4mK) under high magnetic fields. The Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Facility (AMRIS) for magnetic resonance and tomography is also located there.

In the NHMFL branch at Los Alamos National Laboratory is the Pulsed Field Facility with pulsed magnets, including a. a. a 60T magnet with a variable pulse profile and a short pulse magnet with a maximum field strength of 100T.
