Nanouk is a Bulgarian-German-French film directed by Milko Lazarov and based on the script by Simeon Ventsislavov . It is about a couple who live traditionally in the eternal ice of Yakutia , almost completely isolated. Your life, aging and dealing with changing nature are portrayed in a silent drama.

The film had its world premiere in 2018 at the Berlin International Film Festival and has been in German cinemas via Neue-Visionen Filmverleih since October 18, 2018.

action

The reindeer hunter Nanouk (Mikhail Aprosimov) and his wife Sedna (Feodosia Ivanova) live in a yurt in the hostile ice desert of Yakutia, following the traditions of their ancestors. Modern civilization is only noticeable in the contrails and the occasional helicopter flyby. Nature is changing - the hunt becomes more and more difficult, the ravens come earlier and the ice is thinning. Chena (Sergei Egorov), who visits her regularly, is the only connection with the outside world and with her daughter Ága, who left her parents a long time ago. Sedna would like to talk about it, but Nanouk only finds herself speechless. It is only when Sedna's condition worsens that Nanouk sets out to find Ága (Galina Tikhonova) and comes into a completely strange world.

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK for children aged 6 and over with the release date July 6, 2018. The statement of reasons for release states that children from the age of 6 understand the story sufficiently and are not overwhelmed even in a scene in which a snow fox's fur is peeled off.

criticism

According to Jenni Zylka from Spiegel Online , Lazarov relies on the visual impact of the environment, the outstanding soundtrack and the strength of the emotions that Mikhail Aprosimov and Feodosia Ivanova are able to show with minimal gestures. In his second feature film, Lazarov deals with a topic that can play anywhere, where children become alienated, where two love each other and parents age. Lazarov has shown in his masterpiece that the private can also become political in the eternal ice.

According to Knut Elstermann from MDR Kultur , Lazarov observes this couple in a wonderful way, who have adjusted completely in their long lives. Every grip is perfect and their mutual affection is always palpable, which the protagonists only turn into a touching experience with glances and silent gestures. It is a visually stunning work about the beauty of a threatened nature and as a silent drama about the intimate, vital relationship between two people, it is universally valid at the same time.
