The National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth ( German " National Museum of the Royal Navy of Portsmouth " , previously Royal Naval Museum , German "Royal Naval Museum" ) in the southern English port city of Portsmouth illustrates the three hundred year history of the navy using impressive original exhibits . Naturally, the focus is on the history of the Royal Navy , i.e. the United Kingdom's navy . The museum is part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRM) , the umbrella organization for British naval museums .
In the immediate vicinity of the museum is the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard ( German " Museumshafen Portsmouth" ), in which some museum ships are moored. This includes the HMS Victory , Nelson's flagship in the Battle of Trafalgar .
history
The museum was founded in 1911 and was initially called Dockyard Museum ( German " Werftmuseum " ). In 2010 it became part of the NMRM and was given its current name.
Exhibitions
The museum is located in three historical storage buildings, two of which date from 1763 and 1776 respectively. Adjacent to this in the open are the HMS Victory and the HMS M33 , a monitor from 1915 that took part in the Battle of Gallipoli . Inside, original artifacts from British maritime history are exhibited, such as the Trafalgar Sail ( German “Trafalgar sail ” ), probably the largest original remnant of the Trafalgar naval battle of 1805.
