The Monte Cristi National Park (Parque Nacional Monte Cristi ) is a national park in the Dominican Republic .

history

The Monte Cristi National Park was established in 1983.

geography

The national park is located in the far northwest of the country on the border with Haiti and has an area of ​​over 550 km². Most of the park consists of marine areas and mangrove swamps . In the north of the park is the striking table mountain El Morro de Montecristi ( 207  m ) on a peninsula . The park also includes the seven small islands of Cayos Siete Hermanos .

The landscape of the Monte Cristi National Park is shaped by the delta of the three rivers Río Yaque del Norte , Río Masacre and Río Chacuey . In the delta there are dense mangrove forests , in the southern section there are dunes, rocks and sandy beaches that are also used for tourism.

fauna and Flora

In addition to amphibians and molluscs , the park is particularly noticeable for its avifauna : Cayenne night heron , great egret, red-footed booby and the rabbit owl are native there. The Caribbean manatee ( nail manatee ) and many cancerous species are particularly common.
