The Sutjeska National Park ( Bosnian Nacionalni park Sutjeska ) is the oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located in the Republika Srpska in the south-east of the country and extends over an area of 175 km² in the catchment area of the Sutjeska , a tributary of the Drina . The national park is located around 25 km south of Foča and 70 km southeast of Sarajevo on the Montenegrin border.

On the eastern edge of the park is the highest peak in the country, the 2,386 m Maglić . The park also includes one of the last primeval forests in the warm temperate zone of Europe, the Perućica primeval forest. Other sights include the 75 m high Skakavac waterfall of the Perućica river and the Sutjeska gorge, which separates the over 2000 m high Zelengora mountain ranges in the west and Maglić and Volujak in the east. The Neretva , the most important river in Herzegovina , has its source just south of the park .

The animal species native to the Sutjeska National Park include: a. Brown bear and wolf , who have an extensive retreat here.

During the Second World War , the area of the park was the scene of the Battle of the Sutjeska between the Yugoslav partisans and the Wehrmacht , which is now remembered by several monuments in the national park. The battle was themed in the feature film The Fifth Offensive - Kesselschlacht an der Sutjeska (1972).

Settlements and infrastructure

The park lies entirely within the territory of the Foča Association . The largest place in the protected area is Tjentište . A total of around 2500 people live in the national park.
