Sodium phenolate is the sodium salt of phenol . It is created by the reaction of phenol with sodium hydroxide solution .

Sodium phenolate is used for the preparation of salicylic acid by means of the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction . To do this, it is heated under pressure with carbon dioxide and the resulting sodium salicylate is reacted with sulfuric acid:
