Sodium salicylate is the sodium salt of salicylic acid . Sodium salicylate serves as a precursor to the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA).
Extraction and presentation
Sodium salicylate is obtained by saturating sodium phenolate with carbon dioxide under high pressure and elevated temperature. This is the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction , which was introduced industrially in 1844 .
use
Sodium salicylate is used:
- as an anti-inflammatory and anti- pyretic (similar properties to salicylic acid , but better tolerated, but less well tolerated than ASA)
- as a keratolytic for topical use. In the past also used to sclerose varicose veins
- as detection means for nitrate ions (formation of yellow colored sodium nitrosalicylate ).
- as a preservative in the food and cosmetics industries
- as a propellant charge in whistling fireworks
- as a gloss additive for cyanidic brass electrolytes
- as a scintillator substance in luminescence spectroscopy
- as denaturant in cosmetics
