The Hanomag L 28 was a light truck from the German manufacturer Hanomag . The vehicle was Hanomag's first completely redeveloped commercial vehicle after the Second World War . It is to be assigned to the large vans or light trucks division.

The Hanomag L 28 appeared in 1950. It was designed as a modern long-bonnet truck and had a so-called "alligator hood" based on American models and headlights that were integrated into the front of the vehicle (i.e. no longer free-standing), which gave the vehicle a modern look at the time. A short time later, the two competing models Opel Blitz (1952) and Borgward B 1500 (1954) were given a similar appearance . The L 28 was initially designed for a 1½ tonne payload, in the course of time other versions for 2, 2½ and 3 tonne payloads appeared, in 1956 a 1.75 tonne model appeared instead of the 1½ and 2 tonne versions. The entire model series was powered by Hanomag diesel engines with initially 50 hp, later diesel engines with 65 and 70 hp were also included in the range for the larger models. Common versions were the flatbed truck , the closed box van and the separate box body , and a minibus variant was also available with bodies from bodywork companies .

The water-cooled in-line four-cylinder four-stroke cycle - diesel engine with 2.8 L displacement of Hanomag L 28 1953 to improve performance with a Roots - supercharger provided, which has been driven via a V-belt. The sound of the Hanomag D-28 engines was characterized by the particularly striking "diesel nailing" and the "singing" of the fan.

In 1955, the L-28 driver's cab was given front-hinged doors instead of the usual rear- hinged door, and in recent years, instead of the two small ones , a large curved panoramic windshield , which made the driver's cab look much more modern. Between 1958 and 1960, the L 28 series was gradually replaced by the forward control successor series Hanomag Kurier, Garant and Markant , which were named differently according to their weight .

Hanomag AL 28

Hanomag AL 28 with box body (formerly THW -MKW)

In 1958, Rheinstahl took over Hanomag and the new company Rheinstahl-Hanomag built a technically independent offshoot based on the Hanomag L 28 driven by the rear axle. The all-wheel drive type AL 28 was created using parts of the L 28 with the 65 and 70 HP Hanomag diesel engines, the driver's cab and the front panel ( grill ). The vehicle, measured against the normal L 28, has long legs, but at the same time appears compact, and was built with flatbed bodies, but above all with open and closed box bodies as radio, command, equipment or crew vehicles. It was bought in large numbers by the Federal Border Police , riot police and auxiliary services such as the THW and is still in service with some auxiliary services to this day (2014). Only a few went to civilian buyers. The model stayed in the range until 1971, eleven years longer than the rear-wheel drive L 28. It received a new, wider hood in 1964. Many of the all-terrain AL 28s continued to be used as all-terrain mobile homes after they were taken out of service by the authorities .

The type AL 28 was built in versions with 1½ t and 2½ t payload, as a civil version AL 28 Z and as an all-wheel group vehicle. About 6,000 copies were made between 1953 and 1971. The peak of production was reached in 1963 with 1,657 vehicles.

The AL 28 received the 2.8-liter diesel engine of the 3-tL-28 model with an output of 70 hp (51 kW) at 2800 rpm. The vehicles had a ZF four- speed gearbox (AKS-25) with a countershaft and simultaneous engagement of the front-wheel drive (1: 1.18 / 1: 2.138). The second and third gears were synchronized. With an empty weight of 3860 kg, the top speed was 72 km / h, the climbing ability 69%. Most recently, the vehicles were equipped with a hydraulically operated dual-circuit brake with compressed air support. One brake circuit worked on the front axle, the other at the rear. The vehicle was fitted with single tires at the front and rear (versions A and A 1) or with twin tires at the rear (A 2).

On April 1, 1969 , the commercial vehicle divisions of Hanomag and Henschel-Werke merged within the Rheinstahl Group to form Hanomag-Henschel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH (HHF). Daimler-Benz AG initially took over 51% of this company and the remainder of the share capital at the end of 1970. The last AL 28 were produced under the company name Hanomag-Henschel, in 1974 the Hanomag-Henschel brand disappeared from the truck market.
