The landslide that formed the natural monument did not occur until after the last ice age , a few millennia ago. No Ice Age influences could be found here.

The falling material from the large blocks is still visible in the forest today and the demolition itself is now partially represented as a separate rock face. The layering of the blocks resulted in caves , such as B. the money hole .

At the time of the coalition wars / Vorarlberg people's uprising in 1809 , legend has it that the landslide area of the Rappenfluh served as a hiding place for various residents of Hittisau. The natural monument is a retreat for animals as well as a wintering place. These withdraw into the covered caves created here . This natural monument, protected since 1955, was removed from the list of natural monuments in 1984 and placed under protection again in 1991.

In 2018, two injured people had to be rescued in the Rappenfluh area. One of the people had crashed in the money hole , the other person was hanging freely and injured in the Dachstein wall .
