Geschrittenstein-Írottkő Nature Park

The Geschrittenstein-Írottkő nature park is a cross-border nature park in the Austrian Burgenland and in the Hungarian Vas county in the Günser Mountains .

The nature park was first established on the Austrian side in 1996. The Hungarian part followed shortly afterwards as a project supported by EU PHARE funds. The nature park was named after the written stone in German and Hungarian, which at 884  m above sea level. A. is the highest point in Burgenland and its summit is directly on the border between the two states.

Within the nature park there are the communities Lockenhaus , Unterkohlstätten , Rechnitz and Markt Neuhodis on the Austrian side, on the Hungarian side the city of Kőszeg and the communities Bozsok , Cák , Kőszegdoroszló , Kőszegszerdahely and Velem .

The size in Austria is 8,500 ha , the much larger part in Hungary has 27,000 ha around Kőszeg. There are around 500 km of hiking trails, on which you can move freely in both countries since the Schengen Agreement .

Numerous themed trails such as a mushroom nature trail or a Bach flower power park are designed as attractions . A small swimming pond was created in the Faludital. This was built in 1964 as a bathing reservoir, whereby the Rechnitzbach , which has its sources at Geschrittenstein , is dammed. In Oberkohlstätten there is an old charcoal burner , as it used to be in this area.

There are several sources in the Hungarian part, including the Hörmann's source and the Kiszsidány source. The source version of the Siebenbründl ( Hétforrás ) near the Austrian border was established in 1896. The spring is surrounded by small stone tablets that remind of the seven tribal princes Álmos , Előd, Ond, Kond, Tas, Huba and Töhötöm .

The Steirerhäuser Forest School commemorates the foresters who were brought to Hungary from Styria under Maria Theresa .
