The Skogsö nature reserve is a nature reserve north of Saltsjöbaden in the municipality of Nacka . The reserve extends over the entire Skogsö peninsula and borders the small town of Fisksätra to the west . In the north, the border of the nature reserve follows the waterline of the Baggenstäket. The southern border is the place Igelboda . The reserve covers an area of around 150 hectares , including around 35 hectares of water, and was established in 1997.

nature

The heart of the reserve is the Skogsö peninsula. The hilly, wooded area is criss-crossed by small valleys. At the edges of the nature reserve there are mainly meadows and pastures. The entire area of the reserve was a dense forest 2000 years ago. It was only through the rapid growth of the Swedish capital Stockholm and the surrounding communities in the 16th century that parts of the forest areas were cleared and used for agriculture .

In the middle of the reserve are the Skogsö swamps. These were still connected to the surrounding sea water around 1000 years ago. This connection has been interrupted by the lower water level.

In the nature reserve there are different habitats such as pine forests, moist spruce forests, deciduous forests and old farmland. In the past, rare plants and animals were discovered here.

A topographic map from 1895 shows that the larger area of the arable land was originally the northern area of the Skogsö swamps. In 1940 agricultural use of the area was discontinued. The hills a hundred meters west of the junction of Övägen and Moravägen are several glacier pots that were formed during the last ice age .

history

In the nature reserve Skogsö you can find a lot of evidence of times gone by. The oldest site is from the Viking Age . The Baggensstäket was already an important shipping channel between the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren in the Iron Age . Stone forts carved into the rock date from this time, and there are also several tombs from this time.

In the 17th century, the old Boo cemetery was established on the peninsula. It is located in the northeast of the reserve and is now the oldest cemetery in Nacka, but is no longer used.

In August 1719 the battle at Södra Stäket took place on the peninsula . A far inferior Swedish army managed to prevent a Russian invasion. The most important part of this fight took place north of the Skogsö swamps. The Swedish soldiers who were killed were probably buried in the old Boo cemetery. The Skogsömonument (inaugurated in 1905) commemorates this fight.

The remains of the Stäket Redoute , which was once located on a small hill, can still be seen. The defense system was built at the beginning of the 18th century by order of Baltzar von Dahlheim , in command of Vaxholm Fortress , to secure the bay and the passage towards Stockholm.
