The Herkensiefen nature reserve is a nature reserve between Luisental and Benninghausen in the town of Burscheid in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .

It is a small Siefental with beech forests and a natural stream course. The Siefental represents a valuable habitat due to the well-developed biotope complex with endangered plant communities, forest communities, natural spring areas and stream structures.

Protection goals

In detail, these are the following protective measures:

  • Preservation and safeguarding of the near-natural source areas and flowing waters,
  • Securing the function as a biotope composite area of ​​outstanding importance with connecting elements,
  • Protection, care and development of natural and undeveloped rivers, natural, undeveloped source areas, wet and wet grassland fallow land and natural forest stands, as well as the location of adapted, characteristic and rare animal and plant species,
  • Preservation and protection of the near-natural forest stands with individual old beech trees rich in knots as a habitat, especially for animals specially adapted to such habitats.
