The Heronger Buschberge, Wankumer Heide nature reserve is located in the area of the city of Straelen and the municipality of Wachtendonk in the Kleve district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The area, which consists of three sub-areas, extends southeast of the Straelen town of Herongen . The B 221 runs along the western edge, the state border with the Netherlands runs to the west, and the A 40 runs to the north . For Straelen and Wachtendonk, a 613.1 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve under the identification number KLE-009 since 1938. The area was placed under protection for the preservation and enhancement of the undergrowth and herbaceous, partly moist forest complexes of the Wankumer Heide , the Heronger Buschberge with the largely unpolluted source brooks Schürkesbach, Weyersbach and Römerbach as biotope networking elements between the nature reserve Krickenbecker Seen ( Viersen district ) and the average Niersniederung including biotope formative forest-free island and surrounding areas.
