Holmvassdalen nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Holmvassdalen nature reserve is a state forest in the municipality of Grane in the northern Norwegian province of Nordland . It is about 60 km². It is west of the European route 6 , 25 to 30 kilometers south of Trofors .

The area was protected on December 19, 2008 in order to preserve the almost untouched nature and great biodiversity . Holmvassdalen is one of the last large contiguous primeval forest areas ("old growth") and was originally supposed to be included in a list of proposals for designation as a nature reserve at the end of 1997. At that time, the nature conservation initiative Pro Rainforest particularly emphasized the large number of old fallen trees, which offered many rare and threatened species protection and a food source. In the valley there are barren rocky cliffs with spruce forests on calcareous soils, a diverse bird population and slopes with springs and deeper soils overgrown with mushrooms and lichen-covered spruce.
