The Kennedy Lakes nature reserve ( English Kennedy Lakes Protected Natural Area , French Zone naturelle protégée des lacs Kennedy ) is a protected area in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . The protected area in the center of the province was designated in 2003. It extends over an area of 206.65 km² in the far west of Northumberland County .
description
The reserve is located in the two ecoregions of Southern Uplands and Valley Lowlands . It ranges from 200 m to 580 m in height. The core of the nature reserve is the eponymous lake system of the Kennedy Lakes with the surrounding wetlands. Larger lakes are Main Kennedy Lake , Lower Kennedy Lake, and Second Fowler Lake . The area is drained by the two headwaters of the Renous River .
The nature reserve is heavily forested. Weather-resistant deciduous trees grow on the hills, while less tolerant deciduous trees, balsamic firs and spruces can be found in the valleys . Banks and Weymouth pines thrive in the central areas of the reserve, where it is drier and more rocky . Black spruce and Thuja occidentalis prefer more humid locations within the reserve.
As a Category II reserve, the Kennedy Lakes Conservation Area is open to the public. Route 108 (Renous - Plaster Rock ) runs along the southern border of the reserve . From there the lakes can be reached by canoe and wooden plank paths.
