The Renous River is a 40 km long left tributary of the Southwest Miramichi River in the Canadian province of New Brunswick .

River course

The Renous River runs in the central south of Northumberland County . It arises at the confluence of its two headwaters , North Branch and South Branch Renous River . It flows mainly in an easterly direction. 11 km above the mouth, the Dungarvon River meets the Renous River from the right. The Renous River finally flows into the Southwest Miramichi River near the settlement Renous-Quarryville , 24 km above its junction with the Northwest Miramichi River . The Route 8 ( Miramichi - Fredericton ) crossing the flow 1.5 km above the mouth thereof. The Route 108 follows the river. The catchment area of ​​the Renous River is heavily forested.

Hydrology

The river drains an area of ​​1429 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 32 km above the mouth is 14.7 m³ / s. In April and May the river carries the largest amount of water with an average of 40.6 and 45.0 m³ / s. The influence of the tidal currents extends up the Southwest Miramichi River to the confluence of the Renous River.

Fish fauna

The Renous River is well known for fishing for Atlantic salmon . Its hike takes place from June to October. Only fly fishing is allowed. Large salmon must be released again ( catch and release ).

North Branch Renous River

The 60 km long headwaters of the Renous River rises on the southeast flank of the 610  m high Braithwaite Mountain . In the upper reaches it flows through the lakes Depot Lake and North Renous Lake . The North Branch Renous River (former name: North Renous River ) flows in a predominantly east-southeast direction. It runs between river kilometers 45 and 15 through the north of the Kennedy Lakes nature reserve (Class II Protected Natural Area (PNA)). The Kennedy Lakes are a lake system that drains to the North Branch Renous River.

South Branch Renous River

The approximately 52 km long right source river of the Renous River rises on the western flank of Shunabit Mountain at an altitude of about 400  m . The South Branch Renous River (former name: South Renous River ) flows mainly in an easterly direction. It flows through the south of the Kennedy Lakes nature reserve for the first 12 kilometers.
