The Northwest Miramichi River is the approximately 135 km long headwaters of the Miramichi River in the Canadian province of New Brunswick .
River course
The Northwest Miramichi River rises at an altitude of 390 m in the Historians Range in northern Northumberland County not far from the course of the Nepisiguit River .
It initially flows almost 100 km in a predominantly eastward direction through a hilly landscape. After the confluence of the left tributaries Tomogonops River and Portage River , the Northwest Miramichi River turns south for the next 40 kilometers. On this section the Big Sevogle River and the Little Sevogle River flow into the river from the west. At river kilometer 20 the Little Southwest Miramichi River , the most important tributary , flows from the west into the Northwest Miramichi River. This then turns to the east. Coming from the north, the Northwest Millstream meets the river before it finally joins the Southwest Miramichi River west of the city of Miramichi to form the Miramichi River.
The Atlantic salmon is found in the river system of the Northwest Miramichi River .
Hydrology
The river drains an area of approx. 3800 km². The mean discharge at the Trout Brook gauge 40 km above the estuary is 21.9 m³ / s. In April and May the river carries the largest amount of water with an average of 59.7 and 63.9 m³ / s. The lower course of the river is in the area of the tidal current .
