Navarre Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Navarre Company (Compañía navarra) was a mercenary force that was mainly recruited from Navarre and Gascony .

The company was initially used by King Charles II of Navarre in the war against France and lost its livelihood when the peace was concluded in 1366. The mercenaries were recruited by Ludwig von Navarre , brother of Charles II, who let the troops grow considerably between 1372 and 1375 through recruiting from Navarre and who finally used them in the battle for the Duchy of Durazzo . In the summer of 1376, the troops succeeded in conquering the city of Durazzo, but Ludwig could no longer use this success because he died shortly afterwards. The company then moved to Peter IV of Aragón in 1377 , who used it in Sicily.

In 1378 the company came to Morea . In 1379 Jacques des Baux recruited her there in the battle for the Principality of Achaia , whereupon she devastated the Peloponnese in the following years . She also conquered Thebes and parts of the Duchy of Neopatria and the Duchy of Athens . After Jacques des Baux died in 1383, the company itself took over the de facto rule in Achaia and the conquered neighboring areas. After some turmoil, Pedro Bordo de San Superano († 1402), the captain of the Navarre Company, prevailed as the new prince of Achaia in 1396 .
