Navsari is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat . The city is located in the south of the state and is about 30 km from the megacity Surat .

The city is the capital of the Navsari district . Navsari has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 17 wards (constituencies).

history

Two families of Zoroastrian Parsi priests settled in Navsari in the early 13th century and the city soon became the main center of the Parsi priesthood and their religion. New Parsi congregations then settled here, as there was already an existing congregation of priests. Surat replaced Navsari as the main Parsi settlement in the 18th century after it became an important trading center for European traders and the Maratha invaded Navsari. Surat himself lost that position to Bombay (now Mumbai) in the later years .

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 160,941 and that of the metropolitan area is 282,791. Navsari has a gender ratio of 930 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 88.4% in 2011. Almost 80% of the population are Hindus , approx. 12% are Muslim and approx. 8% belong to another or no religion. 10.2% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Infrastructure

The city is connected to the rest of India by a train station. The city forms an important hub on the route from Delhi to Mumbai.
