The riot started in the village of Naxalbari on May 25, 1967, when police opened fire on a group of villagers demanding their right to harvest crops from a certain plot of land. 9 adults and 2 children were killed in the crackdown on the protests, sparking armed resistance that later spread to large parts of the country.
