Nea-Nidelvvassdraget is a river system in Norway . It is located in the municipalities of Tydal , Selbu and Trondheim in Fylke Trøndelag and flows into the Trondheimsfjord with the Nidelva near Trondheim . The catchment area covers 3,100 km² and stretches 160 km from the Swedish border from Sylan to the Trondheimsfjord. Trondheim Energiverk (TEV) operates 15 hydropower plants in the river system, which is heavily regulated. The total annual output is 2,600 GWh . The expansion of hydropower began as early as 1890 with the Øvre Leirfoss kraftverk .
