The Neda ( Greek Νέδα ) is a small river in the west of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece . Its source is near the village of Neda in the Lykaion Mountains . The Neda flows through the regional districts of Messenia , Arcadia and Elis and flows into the Mediterranean Sea in the Gulf of Kyparissia after a run of about 45 km in a westerly direction. There are about 1100 meters of altitude between the origin and the mouth. The valley of the Neda is characterized by scenic beauty and its fertile soils. The farmers live here mainly from growing olives, fruits and vegetables. Oaks , wild figs and ferns grow on the bank . You can find numerous butterflies and dragonflies . The small river, which flows calmly in summer, swells into a dangerously raging body of water in winter and spring. In the middle reaches the river at Figalia digs about 100 meters deep into a gorge. South of Figalia the Neda disappears in a cave and then flows through green floodplains and over some waterfalls. A beautiful old stone bridge from the Turkish times spans the river below the village of Platania for pedestrians. In some places of the lower reaches there are still disused old mills that were operated with the help of branched water channels. Sunken historical cities like Ira and Lepreon were built near the Neda and excavated by archaeologists. Mainly dust roads lead through the valley and only a few bridges cross the Neda. The northerly Minthigebirge and southern Tetraziogebirge reach heights of up to 1400 meters.

"Neda" is one of the few river names in Greek with a female gender.

In Greek mythology , Neda represents a nymph . After the goddess Rhea gave birth to Zeus , she entrusted the divine toddler to the three nymphs Neda, Thisoa and Agno for the care and protection from the aggressive father Kronos .
