Neil Anderson

Sir Neil Dudley Anderson , KBE , CB (born April 5, 1927 in Hastings , New Zealand , † June 5, 2010 in Wellington , New Zealand) was a New Zealand Vice Admiral and Commander of the Armed Forces ( New Zealand Defense Force ).

Life

After schooling in his home town of Hastings, he joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a midshipman in 1944 and, after completing his training as a naval officer , took part in the Korean War on board HMNZS Rotoiti from 1950 to 1951 . In the following years he was trained as a navigator and later was the commander of numerous ships in the New Zealand Navy such as the HMNZS Taranaki , HMNZS Philomel and HMNZS Waikato .

After he was Chief of Naval Staff from 1978 to 1980, he was appointed Vice Admiral and Commander of the Armed Forces (New Zealand Defense Force, NZDF) as the successor to Air Marshal Sir Richard Bolt in 1980. As Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) he was de facto the military commander of the NZDF after the de jure Commander in Chief Queen Elizabeth II and the Commander in Chief de facto in the person of the Acting Defense Minister . He held this position until he retired in 1983. Air Marshal Sir Ewan Jamieson was then succeeded as Chief of Defense .

For his services he was named Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1982 . In 1984 he was ennobled as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

Sir Neil Anderson was married to the New Zealand writer Barbara Anderson .
