Neil Leonard
Neil Leonard (born December 3, 1927 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , † October 13, 2012 in Philadelphia ) was an American university professor and jazz writer .
Neil Leonard grew up in Newton, Massachusetts , received a BA in History from Colby College and a PhD in American Studies from Harvard College . He served in the US Army during the Korean War , where he earned the rank of corporal . Leonard's doctoral thesis Jazz and the White Americans: The Acceptance of a New Art Form (1962) dealt with the cultural attitude of White America towards jazz from a sociological point of view. From 1961 he was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania , first in the faculty of American Civilization , later until the 1990s in the faculty of history. Leonard, who also worked as a writer for music magazines such as Rhythm Music Monthly , died in October 2012 in Hahnemann University Hospital of complications from a stroke. His son Neil Leonard is a sound artist .
