Johanna Cornelia Hermana Bodenheim , or Nelly Bodenheim for short (* May 27, 1874 in Amsterdam ; † January 7, 1951 there ) was a Dutch painter , draftsman , lithographer , member of the Amsterdamse Joffers and known as an illustrator for children's books.

Life

Johanna Cornelia Hermana (Nelly) Bodenheim was born in Amsterdam as the daughter of the art collector and entrepreneur Godfried Bodenheim (1840–1894) and Johanna Wispelweij (1847–1914). From 1887 she received her first drawing training at the Amsterdam drawing and handicraft school for girls, one of the forerunners of the later Gerrit Rietveld Academy. She then continued her education from 1893 to 1895 at the Reich Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. There she met Lizzy Ansingh , Marie van Regteren Altena and Coba Ritsema , among others . They later became known along with other female artists as the Amsterdam Joffers. One of her most important teachers at this time was the painter August Allebé , director of the academy. From 1894 Nelly Bodenheim studied for two years with the painter and critic Jan Veth , who lived in Bussum , because she wanted to concentrate on drawing and lithography. Nelly Bodenheim made her debut as an illustrator of children's books in 1897 with Rietjes Pop by the Amsterdam children's book author Tine van Berken . Together with some other Amsterdam Joffers, such as Lizzy Ansingh and Suze Robertson , Nelly Bodenheim was involved as a member of the Fine Arts Commission in the preparation of the exhibition Die Frau 1813–1913 , the exhibition showed aesthetic picture books by well-known illustrators such as Ben Wierink and Theo van Hoytema and Nelly Bodenheim themselves.
