Suze Robertson
Susanne (Suze) Bisschop-Robertson (born December 17, 1855 in The Hague , † October 18, 1922 in The Hague) was a Dutch painter. She belonged to a group of artists known as the Amsterdamse Joffers .
life and work
Suze Robertson was born into a family of merchants. Her mother died when she was two years old and was subsequently raised by her aunt and uncle. Her talent for drawing was shown early on, in 1874 she began her studies at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten , where she was a student of Jan Philip Koelman . There she won one bronze and two silver medals. In 1876 she took drawing lessons at the Technical University of Delft .
Until 1882 she taught girls in drawing lessons in Rotterdam, and she also took lessons on Sundays from Petrus van der Velden in The Hague. She then began her career as an artist. Her work of simple people in the interiors of farms as well as rough scenes of rural life are reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh's early “ The Potato Eaters ”.
While she was in Rotterdam, Suze Robertson caused a minor scandal by being the first woman to insist on being admitted to the nude drawing class. On June 30, 1892, she married the painter Richard Bisschop in Den Bosch . Their daughter Sara was born two years later. Robertson became a member of Pulchri Studios and Arti et Amicitiae . In the next few years she exhibited widely and won several medals, including one in bronze at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . In 1907 her work was shown at the opening of the new branch of Laren's art trade in Amsterdam, where she sold works with a total value of 10,000 guilders, something of a record at the time. She died in The Hague and was buried there in the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery.
