Richard Bisschop (born June 21, 1849 in Leeuwarden , † March 22, 1926 in Bergen ) was a Dutch painter , draftsman and watercolorist .

life and work

Bisschop was born in Leeuwarden in 1849 as the son of the ironmonger Eelco Cuperus Bisschop and Dieuwke Peters. He was trained in construction. In addition, he had been painting since he was 22 years old and decided to turn it into his profession. His uncle Christoffel Bisschop and his aunt Kate Bisschop-Swift were also painters. He was trained at the Rotterdamse Academie voor Beeldende Kunst .

Bisschop painted genre pictures , figurative representations, portraits as well as city ​​views and interior views of churches. After the death of the painter Johannes Bosboom in 1891, he painted him lying in his coffin and also made a painting in his studio. He worked successively in the cities of Rotterdam , The Hague, Leur and again in The Hague and was a member of the Pulchri Studio artist group in The Hague.

He married the painter Suze Robertson , one of the Amsterdamse Joffers , on June 30, 1892 in 's-Hertogenbosch . From the marriage a daughter, the later painter Sara Bisschop, was born. His granddaughter Suzanne Eckhart became a sculptor. He died in Bergen in March 1926 at the age of 76. His grave is in the Dutch cemetery Oud Eik en Duinen in The Hague .
