The Nelson Mandela Bridge ( Dutch Nelson Mandelabrug , formerly Roermondspleinbrug ) is a road bridge that crosses the Nederrijn , the north-western arm of the Rhine in the Rhine-Maas Delta , in the Dutch city of Arnhem .
It stands on the site of the former Arnhem ship bridge on the western edge of the old town and connects the city center with the Arnhem-Zuid district. It is still colloquially called Nieuwe Rijnbrug in contrast to the Oude Rijnbrug , today's John Frost Bridge .
Construction of the Roermondspleinbrug began in 1974 and was completed in 1977. In 1987 it was named after Nelson Mandela .
In 1993 it became an art object. Rémy Zaugg attached the words HUIZEN - WIND - DE STROOM - DE VERTE - DE UTOPIE - INDONESIE - DE BOTEN - DE ZEE - BLAUWE LUCHT ( HOUSES - WIND - THE CURRENT - THE DISTANCE - THE UTOPIA - INDONESIA - THE BOATS - THE SEA - BLUE SKY ).
description
The Nelson Mandela Bridge consists of two bridge structures standing directly next to each other high above street level in the old town.
The western bridge with four lanes separated by central barriers serves general vehicle traffic. It is connected by a large 360 ° curve to the Roermondsplein , a large square that was artistically designed by Peter Struycken with the Blauwe Golven ( blue waves ), a wave-shaped surface with large strips of dark blue and white pavement.
The eastern bridge has two lanes reserved for public trolleybuses , as well as a wide walkway and bike path, separated by guardrails. This bridge has a long, straight ramp to the Nieuwe Plein .
The entire bridge structure is 446.8 m long and 37.4 m wide. The two main bridges are two-cell, haunched prestressed concrete - box girder bridges with pillar spacing of 71.3 + 136.5 + 72.52 m. The western bridge is 21.1 m wide and has a 14.8 m wide box girder. The eastern bridge is 16.3 m wide, its box girder is 10.8 m wide.
The main bridges were cantilevered with tendons from Freyssinet. The access roads were as a plate girder bridges conventionally on falsework built with tendons of BBRV.
The headroom is, as is customary in the Netherlands, with 22.2 m above NAP indicated (Amsterdam level).
