Neper is a large impact crater on the far eastern edge of the lunar front , south of Mare Marginis and north of Mare Smythii . The crater has pronounced terracing of the wall and a central mountain .

The crater was officially named in 1935 by the International Astronomical Union after the British mathematician John Napier , using the Latinized form of his name that was common among scholars during his lifetime.
