Nesterval

Nesterval is an Austrian theater company that combines elements of immersive theater , urban adventure games and performance .

Format and concept

Nesterval was launched in Vienna in 2011 . Since then, more than twenty large-scale productions have been carried out at home and abroad. The core ensemble consists of around 20 performers who appear in different formations. The lead director is Mr. Finland and the lead dramaturge is Ms. Löfberg. The playful handling of identities, high and popular culture, power relations, queerness and diversity are the starting point for all Nesterval productions. In a mixture of classic playing methods and elements of immersive theater, Mr. Finland and his team have been creating performative adventures since 2011 in which the audience becomes the role-leading actors in the play. Nesterval's productions are site-specific projects that are mostly performed outside the traditional theater space. For example, the Narrenturm in Vienna or, as part of the Styrian Autumn 2015, large parts of the center of the market town of Vordernberg were already performance venues. In accordance with the method of immersive theater, Nesterval usually foregoes a precise separation between actors and participants in his adventures. As a result, the audience becomes an integral part of the action and, through the interaction with the performers, becomes an “action-carrying player”. The unifying element of all productions is that there is always a reference to a member of the fictional "Nesterval family" as well as a playful component.

After strangers had destroyed some pictures of the touring exhibition “Against Forgetting” in Vienna in May 2019, Nesterval initiated a vigil and aroused great attention for the topic.

When the theaters in Austria were also closed from March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Nesterval relocated the production “Der Kreisky Test” to the Internet and designed an online production for the first time.

  • 2018 "Das Dorf": immersive theater in cooperation with brut Wien , which remixes feminist literature of the 19th century with Austrian homeland films and desolate mountain farmer realism. Nominated for the special prize of the Nestroy Theater Prize 2019.

Prizes and awards

On October 14, 2019 it was announced that Nesterval has been nominated for the special prize of the Nestroy Theater Prize with “Das Dorf” .
