Nettilling Lake [ ˈnɛʧɪlɪŋ ], located on Baffin Island on the Arctic Circle , is the largest freshwater lake in the Canadian territory of Nunavut and the eleventh largest in Canada with an area of 5542 km² and a maximum length of 123 km .

It is 30  m above sea level. 110 km southwest of Auyuittuq National Park and 280 km northwest of Iqaluit in the great plain of Koukdjuak and forms together with the second largest lake on Baffin Island, Amadjuak Lake , from which it is fed, as well as Mingo Lake and a variety of River damming an extensive lake area. The Nettilling Lake pours over the very shallow and wide Koukdjuak River into the Foxe Basin .

Composed of the three bays Mirage, Camsell and Burwash, the eastern part of the lake turns out to be relatively shallow, and so there are a number of small islands here, while the western part is much deeper and without islands.

The south bank of the Nettilling Lake was discovered in 1883 by the German-American polar explorer Franz Boas . Between 1924 and 1926 Joseph Dewey Soper (1893–1982) stayed in the lake area and explored the region up to Lake Amadjuak. At that time, many Inuit lived here in their camps because of the abundance of caribou and fish ; today the area is no longer inhabited.

The name "Nettilling" probably goes back to the Inuktitut word for seal, Netsiq: The lake, which is frozen over for most of the year, repeatedly attracts ringed seals. The main inhabitants of the lake are the three fish species arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus ), nine-spined stickleback ( Pungitius pungitius ) and three-spined stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ). For the latter, Lake Nettilling is the northernmost spawning site. All three species of fish feed on larvae of the sea mosquito ( Clunio marinus , family of the Chironomids), which make up 95% of the microfauna of Lake Nettilling.

The tundra around the entire lake area serves caribou herds as a feeding place and region for calving. The most extensive concentration of caribou in the Canadian archipelago develops here in the spring and early summer months, and the main migration route for these animals passes Lake Amadjuak in the spring and fall.
