New Hessian Newspaper

The Neue Hessische Zeitung was a liberal newspaper that was founded by the publicist and politician Friedrich Oetker in Kassel shortly after the beginning of the German Revolution in 1848/1849 and the removal of press censorship in March 1848 . After the incorporation of the “New Constitutional Friend” from Marburg, the Neue Hessische Zeitung soon became a leading organ of the Hessian liberals . The newspaper became the mouthpiece of the politicians Bernhard Eberhard and Karl Wilhelm Wippermann , who were part of the March government in Kurhessen. As partisanship, this brought Oetker violent conflicts with the Democrats.

In June 1850, Oetker had to answer to the jury court and the higher court in Kassel because of an article in his newspaper that appeared on May 27, 1850 under the title “Our situation”. In the article, Oetker criticized the government under Ludwig Hassenpflug , and finally accused the government of deficits in money matters, reliability, honesty and a sense of honor, which Hassenpflug took as an insult. Oetker then exploited the subsequent legal dispute with Hassenpflug, in which Oetker was finally acquitted after long negotiations.

After the government declared war on the country on September 8, 1850 and lifted the freedom of the press, the printing works of the brothers Adolph and Carl Gotthelft, in which the Neue Hessische Zeitung was printed, was occupied by the military and Oetker was arrested later in October. A short time later, Oetker's brother, Carl Oetker , was able to get his release from prison. Oetker then left the state of Kurhessen , which meant the end of the Neue Hessische Zeitung.
