The New Chancellery in Wolfenbüttel is a building in the late Renaissance style . It was created in the second half of the 16th century. Since 1959 the building has been one of the four locations of the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum . An exhibition on the prehistory and early history of the Braunschweig region will be shown .

Building history

The new law firm rests on the foundations of an older previous building. Hans Vredeman de Vries had this converted into an administrative seat on behalf of the Brunswick dukes. For this he enlarged the existing building in the years 1587 to 1588 in the style of the late Renaissance . Another renovation was carried out from 1851 to 1854 by the building assessor L. Kuhne.

Building description

The Neue Kanzlei is an elongated, plastered quarry stone building . The two floors have irregular window positions. In the west, the facade is closed by an escape, in the east by a steep staircase with a landing and arbor , which is located on the first floor of a tower. L. Kuhne had the escape and stair tower increased by one storey between 1851 and 1853 and the originally existing simple dwelling houses removed. The original filing system was retained inside the building.

museum

The building houses the archaeological exhibition of the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum on its first floor. On display are exhibits from the time 500,000 years ago to the conquest by the Franks in the 8th century. In the so-called drawer cabinet, the former archive rooms of the office, the museum regularly shows special exhibitions on special archaeological topics.
