history

The Neue Zeit appeared for the first time on October 27, 1945 as a weekly newspaper. It had been on the market as a daily newspaper since January 1, 1946. The last edition is from April 29, 2001.

Die Neue Zeit, or NZ for short, was affected by the general decline of the party press in Austria in the 1960s and 1970s, to which, for example, the Styrian ÖVP newspaper Südost-Tagespost fell victim in 1987. However, at the end of the 1980s, the NZ managed to break away from its close dependence on the SPÖ . The experiment, which was started in July 1987 as an independent left-liberal newspaper owned by the employees, worked very well for a short time (in 1991 the circulation was around 70,000 copies). The NZ survived the central organ of the SPÖ, the Arbeiter-Zeitung , by at least 10 years, but ultimately also failed because of economic realities. According to a press release by the Association of Austrian Newspapers on April 11, 2001, the Graz Regional Court opened the bankruptcy of the daily newspaper. The Alpenländischer Kreditorenverband commented: "After the press funding was recently cut at the federal level and canceled at the state level, the company had been lacking any liquidity for a long time. This was compounded by declining sales figures, with 'Neue Zeit' recently having around 16,000 subscribers and approx . 80,000 readers should have. " The increase in paper prices and postal rates also created financial burdens. The difficult situation also caused significant wage arrears to accumulate among staff. Publisher and editor-in-chief Josef Riedler tried in vain to ensure that the regional newspaper, which had previously been declared dead several times, would be published again.
