The Neulausitzische is the German colloquial language in the Sorbian settlement area in the Lausitz . It differs from the Lausitz dialects by the influence of Sorbian .

Emergence

Until the early modern times, Polabia , also called Wenden, settled east of the Saale and Elbe as well as in the Hanoverian Wendland . They were closely related to the Sorbs and were later largely Germanized. Only in the Lausitz a coherent Slavic language area remained where the Sorbs speak their native languages: in the Oberlausitz to Bautzen the Upper Sorbian and in the Lower Lausitz to Cottbus and the Spreewald the Lower Sorbian .

For economic and political reasons, the Sorbs were forced to learn German, especially since the 17th century. By the first half of the 20th century, the transition from Sorbian monolingualism to Sorbian-German bilingualism was complete in most areas of Lusatia. The German they speak is essentially the colloquial language of Dresden , Bautzen and Cottbus, but with a Slavic substrate . This Sorbian-influenced German is called Neulausitzisch .
