The first town hall in the then independent town of Altendresden was first mentioned in a document in 1455. It was rebuilt from 1527 to 1528 based on designs by Melchior Trost . It stood free-standing on the Neustädter Markt between Hauptstrasse and Kasernenstrasse.

The building was two-story. It had Renaissance gables and a high roof on the side fronts . On it sat a bell tower with an onion tip. The large council chamber was on the first floor and the council cellar in the basement. Here a tenant was allowed to pour beer and wine.

At the back of the town hall there were bread and butcher benches where bakers and butchers offered their goods.

After the merger of Altendresden with neighboring Dresden in 1549, the town hall continued to be used as a court. It was restored in 1677; the building survived the great city fire in 1685 unscathed. At the end of the 1870s, however, the building was demolished, as a new town hall was already being built with the expansion of Dresden Neustadt.

The new town hall was built on the site of the malt and brewery that burned down in the town fire in 1685. The planning for the construction began in 1732. The council mason Johann Christoph Berger (1708–1760) and the council carpenter George Friedrich Winckler (1704–1762) built the new town hall between 1750 and 1754. The design comes from Johann Gottfried Fehre , revised he was made by Johann Christoph Knöffel .

The simple town hall building had four floors and was divided by pilaster strips . Nine windows faced the Neustädter Markt and 21 windows faced the main street. The third wing was on Rathausgässchen. A roof turret sat on the high roof. The corner to the Neustädter Markt was sloping. One of the two nymph fountains by Johann Benjamin Thomae was located here . Copies of the fountain are today at the entrance to the main street.

The town hall housed the Neustädter Stadtgericht as well as rooms for dressmakers and cloth merchants. The Ratskeller was again housed in the basement, along with the bread and meat banks. These were converted into shops from 1868 to 1870. In addition, the municipal pawnshop was located in the town hall.

In February 1945 the town hall burned down during the air raids on Dresden . The ruin was blown up in 1950.

After the main street was rebuilt, the "Meißner Weinkeller" inn was set up in the vaulted cellar.

Reconstruction efforts

In the meantime, a citizens' initiative to rebuild the town hall has been founded in Dresden. The building is to be reconstructed true to the original , but the interior is to have a modern use. For this purpose, the initiative is looking for an investor who will pay the construction costs. In addition, true-to-scale plans of the Neustadt town hall are currently being made.
