Johann Gottfried, also d. J., was the son of the Dresden council mason Johann Christian Fehre . He learned his father's trade and returned to Dresden after his wanderings , where he was granted citizenship in 1715 . In 1720 he was appointed councilor mason. In Dresden he built several town houses until he managed a major construction project with the construction of the village church in Forchheim from 1719 to 1726 under the council carpenter George Bähr . In the period from 1720 to 1724, together with the master carpenter George Dünnebier, he built the town church of St. Marien in Königstein according to plans by George Bähr. Another construction with the council carpenter is the installation of the Silbermann organ in the Sophienkirche in Dresden. At the same time he built his house at Heinrichstrasse  2 on the corner of Hauptstrasse in Altendresden .

After the death of his father in 1720 he took over his duties. Under the direction of George Bähr, he worked on the new building of the Frauenkirche from 1726 , although he could hardly imagine its stone dome. From 1727 to 1731, the widening of the Dresden Elbe bridge by the Oberland master builder Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann was carried out under his leadership , according to whose design he also took over the mason work on the new building of the Dreikönigskirche in the New Royal City after 1731 Elector Augustus the Strong had instructed the to demolish the church built under Johann Gottfried's father because it blocked the view of Bautzner Platz, today Albertplatz , and was located in the middle of the new main axis . In 1736 the bell tower for the Sophienkirche in Dresden was built according to plans by Johann Christoph Knöffel .

In the period from 1741 to 1745, the Dresden City Hall was built on the Altmarkt under his direction . Together with the council carpenter Georg Friedrich Winkler , he built the town hall on Neustädter Markt between 1750 and 1752 , the outer facade of which was designed according to plans by the chief master builder Knöffel. In 1751 he built the diaconate building of the Annenkirche . An expert opinion on the state of construction of the tower of the Schneeberger St. Wolfgang Church is also mentioned in the documents. He died in Dresden in 1753 and left behind a large number of emphasized buildings with simply structured facades with pilasters and parapet mirrors.

His main works include the construction of the Dresden Frauenkirche , especially the lantern, after the death of George Bähr from 1740 to 1743. In addition, from 1741 to 1745, Fehre was in charge of the construction of the new town hall on the Altmarkt according to plans by Johann Christoph Knöffel . He was responsible for the plans for the Neustadt town hall, which was rebuilt between 1750 and 1754 . From 1746 to 1748 he created the Marienkirche in Großenhain with Johann George Schmidt .
