Johann George Schmidt (also called Johann George Schmiedt ; * 1707 in Fürstenwalde near Geising ; † July 24, 1774 in Dresden ) was a late Baroque master builder and councilor carpenter of the city.

Life

He trained as a carpenter and, at the age of 25, worked with his cousin George Bähr on the construction of the Frauenkirche and Dreikönigskirche , so he created drawings and models. In the year George Bährs died, he acquired the master's license. On January 8, 1739 he acquired the citizenship of Dresden. On April 1, 1740, he married the widow George Bährs and moved into the Bährs house, An der Mauer 2. He worked as a carpenter in the construction of the Catholic court church in Chiaveris. From 1744 to 1748 he built the town church in Großenhain. In 1764 he became a council builder in Dresden.

Schmidt died on July 24, 1774, he was buried in the Johanniskirchhof .

His buildings, which were built after the destruction of Dresden during the Seven Years' War , became famous. He is considered to be the builder of the second Church of St. Anne and, together with Christian Friedrich Exner, the builder of the Kreuzkirche . Together with Johann Gottfried Fehre he built the Dreikönigskirche , together with Johann Friedrich Knöbel the Gewandhaus . From 1746 to 1748 he created the Marienkirche in Grossenhain with Fehre .

The New Church at Weesenstein Castle is also attributed to him. He also made several private houses, including the house at Große Brüdergasse 25 in Dresden.

Others

Schmidt was a brother-in-law, student and successor to George Bähr .
